It helps in examining the thigh bone, shin bone, smaller bone in the lower leg, and the knee cap. An x-ray beam passes from the side and offers information around the soft tissues, inflammation of the joint and the quadriceps.

The lateral view means the X-ray beam passes from the inner side of the knee to the outer side, helping to capture a clear side profile of the joint.
A digital detector or X-ray plate will be placed next to your knee to record the image. The radiographer will ensure your leg is correctly aligned and ask you to stay still for a few seconds while the X-ray is taken.
