Before your X-ray Chest PA View, our radiographer will review your medical history, symptoms such as cough, chest pain, or breathlessness, and any previous imaging or lung conditions. You will be asked to remove metallic objects, such as jewelry, chains, spectacles, or clothing with metal buttons, as these can interfere with the image quality.
If you are pregnant or think you may be, please inform the radiographer before the scan so that necessary precautions can be taken or an alternative test can be suggested.
No fasting or special preparation is required for this scan. You can eat, drink, and take your regular medications as advised. Wearing loose, comfortable clothing or a hospital gown will make the procedure easier and more comfortable.
During the test, you will be guided to the X-ray room and asked to stand facing the X-ray plate or detector. The PA (posteroanterior) view means the X-ray beam passes from the back of your chest to the front, providing a clear image of your lungs, heart, and chest wall.
The radiographer will position your chin slightly upward and shoulders rolled forward to prevent any obstruction of the lung fields. You will be asked to take a deep breath and hold it for a few seconds while the X-ray is taken — this helps expand your lungs for a clearer image.
