Doctors use this type of x-ray to diagnose a variety of conditions like alignment, anatomy, and potential abnormalities. A Cervical Spine AP view exposes the vertebrae from C1-C7 and is captured from the front to the back.
Additionally, the cervical spine AP view helps assess the signs of arthritis and spondylitis. The x-ray also exposes tumors, bone spurs, and other abnormalities and diagnoses of spondylitis, and arthritis.

Before your X-ray Cervical Spine AP View scan, our radiographer will review your medical history and understand the reason for the scan such as neck pain, stiffness, injury, or suspected spinal issues. You will be asked to remove any jewelry, earrings, spectacles, or metallic items around the neck and shoulder area, as these can interfere with the X-ray image.

No fasting or special preparation is required for this scan. You can continue your regular meals and medications. It’s best to wear loose, comfortable clothing or a hospital gown for easy positioning and convenience during the procedure.
During the scan, you will be guided to the X-ray room and asked to stand or sit upright facing the X-ray machine. The AP (anteroposterior) view means the X-ray beam passes from the front of your neck through to the back, capturing a clear frontal image of your cervical spine.
The radiographer will position your head straight, with your chin slightly raised, to ensure proper alignment of the cervical vertebrae. A digital detector or X-ray plate will be placed behind your neck to record the image.
You will be asked to remain still and hold your breath for a few seconds while the X-ray is taken. The process is quick, safe, and painless, typically completed within a few minutes. Only a minimal and safe dose of radiation is used to capture detailed images of your neck bones, joints, and alignment.
After the scan, you can immediately return to your normal daily activities. There are no side effects or recovery time needed. If you were wearing a gown, you can change back into your clothes right away.
