A pelvic ultrasound is a non-invasive and painless way of imaging the structures and internal organs between the pelvis bone. A radiologist scans the pelvic area using a transducer that sends electronic signals to a specialized computer. High frequency radio waves are sent by the transducer to the pelvic region. During the procedure, you’ll be asked to lie comfortably on your back on the examination table. A clear, water-based gel is applied to your lower abdomen to help sound waves travel between the ultrasound probe and your skin. The sonologist will gently move the probe over your abdomen to capture real-time images of the uterus, ovaries, bladder, and surrounding pelvic structures.
If a transvaginal scan is recommended for better visualization, a thin, covered, and lubricated probe is gently inserted into the vagina to get closer, clearer images of internal pelvic organs.
