An obstetric ultrasound is a non-invasive and painless way of imaging the developing fetus inside the mother’s womb. Additionally, it also helps in imaging the uterus, ovaries, placenta, amniotic fluid, and so on. A radiologist scans the abdominal area using a transducer that sends electronic signals to a specialized computer. High frequency radio waves are sent by the transducer, which bounces off the uterus and fetus and echoes back to the handheld device.

A clear, water-based gel will be applied to your abdomen to help the ultrasound transducer make good contact with your skin. The sonologist will gently move the probe over your abdomen to visualize your baby’s position, heartbeat, growth, and surrounding structures such as the placenta and amniotic fluid.
