It’s often advised for neck pain, numbness in arms, disc bulge, spinal cord compression, or injuries. This scan clearly shows soft-tissue and nerve conditions that X-rays or CT scans may miss.
Before your MRI cervical spine scan, our medical team will review your health history, including any implants, pacemakers, or prior surgeries, to ensure the procedure is safe for you. You will be asked to remove all metallic objects such as jewelry, belts, watches, and hair accessories, as these can interfere with the scan. In certain cases, a contrast dye may be given intravenously to better highlight specific areas of the spine and spinal cord. Unless instructed otherwise, you can continue with your normal diet and medications before the scan.
During the scan, you will lie flat on a motorized table that slides into the MRI machine. A special coil will be positioned around your neck and upper back to capture detailed images of your cervical spine. It’s important to remain very still, as even small movements can blur the images. You may hear rhythmic tapping or thumping sounds from the scanner, which is completely normal; However, earplugs or headphones will be provided for comfort. The scan is painless and typically lasts 30–45 minutes. A trained technologist will monitor you throughout and can communicate with you at any time via intercom.
Once the scan is complete, you can usually return to your daily routine immediately. If contrast dye was used, you may be advised to drink plenty of fluids to help clear it from your system. A radiologist will carefully review the images and prepare a detailed report of your cervical spine, which will be shared with your doctor. Reports are generally ready within a few hours to a day.
