What is a Liver Function Test (LFT)?
Liver Function Test are blood tests done to assess monitor liver function and detect infections and diseases affecting the liver. Liver Function Test checks the levels of enzymes, proteins and other substances produced by the liver. Higher or lower than normal levels of enzymes or proteins can indicate a problem in the liver.
How is the Liver function test performed?
A small amount of blood is drawn to test in the lab. They’ll look for abnormally high or low levels of different substances. They compare levels of different enzymes or proteins to each other. If the balance is off, that can help understand better what goes on in the liver.
What does the Liver Function test measure?
Liver Function Test measures the following various enzymes and proteins found in the liver
Alanine transaminase (ALT)
It is an enzyme found in the liver and kidney. Elevated levels of ALT in the blood can indicate liver damage or disease, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis. ALT is a specific marker for liver injury.
Aspartate transaminase (AST)
AST is an enzyme found in liver cells and other organs such as the heart, kidneys, and muscles. Increased levels of AST can be seen in liver diseases but can also be indicative of heart or muscle damage.
Alkaline phosphate (ALP)
ALP is an enzyme found in various tissues, including the liver, bones, intestines, and placenta. Elevated levels of ALP in the blood can indicate liver disease or obstruction of bile flow.
Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT)
GGT is an enzyme found in various organs, with higher concentrations in the liver. Elevated levels can indicate liver diseases such as hepatitis, alcohol abuse, or bile duct obstruction.
Bilirubin
Bilirubin is a waste found in the liver when the liver breaks down red blood cells. High levels of bilirubin can cause jaundice.
Albumin
Albumin is a protein produced by the liver. It helps maintain fluid balance in the body and carries various substances in the bloodstream. Low levels of albumin can indicate liver disease or other conditions affecting liver function.
Prothrombin time (PT)
PT is the time taken for blood to clot. Prolonged PT time indicates liver damage or blood related disorders.
Who Should get a Liver Function Test?
- People with Symptoms of Liver Disease
- Individuals with High-Risk Habits or Conditions like alcohol consumption, obesity and diabetes
- People Taking Certain Medications
- Pre-Surgery or Routine Health Check-ups
- Monitoring Known Liver Conditions

Why does Aarthi Scans & Labs offer services at low prices?
At Aarthi Scans and Labs, we strongly believe that the cost of diagnosing a disease should never push a patient into financial hardship or make their treatment unaffordable. Unfortunately, the high cost of diagnostic services across the country often leads to delayed diagnoses, unaffordable tests, and limited access to advanced facilities leaving millions vulnerable.
Our vision is simple yet powerful; no one should suffer because a diagnosis is out of reach. To make this a reality, we have consistently kept our pricing 50–60% lower than the industry average, especially for essential services like MRI, CT, and blood tests. We also provide reduced pricing during night hours, further easing access for patients.
Over the last 36 years, it has been the trust of our patients, their word of mouth, and our unwavering commitment to delivering advanced, compassionate diagnostics that have helped us scale and sustain this model. By combining exceptional diagnostic capabilities with affordability, we continue to fight for a healthcare system where early, accurate diagnosis is accessible to all.
