An echocardiogram is an ultrasound-based test that captures detailed images of the heart, showing its chambers, valves, and blood flow. An Echocardiogram, also known as an echo, is an ultrasound procedure that detects the workings of the heart. During an echo, the ultrasound technician applies a gel on the chest and uses the transducer to generate images of the heart. The gel ensures good contact between the transducer and the skin so that the images are clear.
An echocardiogram checks the shape and size of the heart. In addition, it also checks the heart’s rhythm and internal structure. The procedure relies on sound waves that bounce off the internal organs of the chest and get captured by the transducer. The transducer is connected to a specialized computer that generates images of the heart.
An echocardiogram uses sound waves to create moving images of the heart. It helps assess heart valves, pumping strength, and structural abnormalities. Doctors suggest it when they suspect heart failure, valve disease, or congenital defects. This scan gives a clear picture of how well your heart is functioning and guides accurate treatment.
Before an echocardiogram, the patient can have their regular meal as there is no need to fast or have a specific diet. Only if the patient is having a trans esophageal ultrasound, they will be required to not have any meals or drinks few hours before the procedure. Once the patient is in the scan room, they will be given a hospital gown to wear and asked to lie down on the exam bed.
The patient will be asked to remove clothing from the waist. Then a gel is applied on the chest, and a handheld device called the transducer is placed on the chest. The technician moves this transducer across the chest and checks for vitals of the heart. Strong sound waves bounce off the heart and reflect real-time images on the computer screen. The echocardiogram takes 12-20 minutes at best. But time can extend if there are complications in the functioning of the heart.
After the required scan is complete and the technician has adequate images to create a document, the gel is wiped off the patient’s chest. The patient can change into their clothes and go back home.
