Sono Mammography, or breast ultrasound, is a safe and comfortable imaging method used to detect cysts, lumps, or other breast abnormalities. The scan lasts 20–25 minutes, and the report is ready within 6 hours. It costs ₹2,100 and is radiation-free, making it ideal for women of all ages, including those who are pregnant.
A Sono-mammography is the non-invasive and painless method of imaging the female breast tissues using high frequency sound waves. A sonographer applies a water-based gel to the breast and moves the transducer on it. The hand-held device captures the echoes of the sound waves that bounce back and sends them to a specialized computer.
The computer, which is an extension of the ultrasound machine, processes electronic signals and generates real-time images. They check for the size, shape, structure, and various other abnormalities of the breast tissues. Moreover, Sono-mammography is more detailed and safer than a Mammogram scan.
A Sono Mammography or Breast Ultrasound is performed to evaluate breast lumps, pain, or nipple discharge. It helps differentiate between solid masses and fluid-filled cysts and is often used along with a mammogram for comprehensive breast evaluation. It is especially suitable for younger women with dense breast tissue.
Before your Sono Mammography, our radiology team will take a brief medical history, including any breast symptoms, previous imaging, or family history of breast conditions. You’ll be asked to remove jewelry or accessories and change into a comfortable gown provided at the center. Unlike mammograms, no special preparation or fasting is required, but it’s best to schedule the scan a week after your menstrual period, when the breasts are less tender. If you’ve had a recent mammogram or biopsy, inform the technologist so they can correlate your results accurately.
During the procedure, you’ll be asked to lie on your back or slightly turned to one side on the examination table. A clear, water-based gel will be applied to the skin over your breasts to help the ultrasound transducer make secure contact. The radiologist or sonographer will gently move the transducer over each breast and underarm area to capture detailed images of the breast tissue, ducts, and any underlying abnormalities. The process is painless, radiation-free, and typically takes around 15–30 minutes. You may feel mild pressure as the probe is moved across the breast, but no discomfort or pain.
After the scan, the gel will be wiped off, and you can resume your normal activities immediately. There are no side effects or recovery time needed. The ultrasound images are reviewed by a specialist radiologist, who prepares a detailed report assessing the presence of lumps, cysts, or suspicious changes. The report will be shared with your referring doctor to plan any further diagnostic steps or treatment if necessary.
