What is an CT Spine Scan?
A CT spine scan is a diagnostic medical test that uses X-rays and computer technology to produce horizontal, or axial, images (often called slices) of the brain, neck, chest, or other areas of the body. The test is performed by a radiologist, a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries using medical imaging techniques such as X-rays, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasound. A CT spine scan is used to assess the bones, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels of the spine for abnormalities. It can also be used to guide needle biopsies and surgeries. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis, meaning the patient does not stay overnight in the hospital. The test takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete. During the procedure, the patient will lie on a table that slides into the CT machine. The machine will take several X-rays from different angles as it rotates around the body. A computer will then create images of the spine from the X-rays. The radiologist will interpret the images to look for abnormalities of the spine. A report will be sent to the referring physician, who will discuss the findings with the patient. When necessary, additional tests may be ordered to confirm or further evaluate the findings on the CT scan.
When and Why CT Spine Scan is Prescribed?
A CT spine scan may be prescribed by a healthcare provider to help diagnose and treat a variety of conditions that affect the spine, such as fractures, slipped discs, narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis), tumors, infections, or other abnormalities. It can also be used to guide needle biopsies and surgeries. In cases where a patient is experiencing pain or other symptoms, the CT scan may help to identify the cause.
When a CT spine scan is prescribed, the radiologist will explain how it should be performed, including details such as whether contrast material needs to be injected intravenously. The radiologist will also provide instructions on any necessary precautions and tell the patient
