An MRI scan, or magnetic resonance imaging scan, is a diagnostic tool used to produce detailed images of the body. This type of imaging uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create a detailed image of the structure and function of internal organs and other soft tissues. Thanks to its ability to capture detailed images with little risk or discomfort, MRI scans are widely considered to be one of the most accurate and effective forms of medical imaging currently available. Whether you are undergoing a routine screening or being evaluated for a specific condition, an MRI scan can provide valuable information about your health and help your doctor diagnose your condition more precisely.

When and Why MRI Scan is Prescribed?

These imaging techniques can provide valuable information about the structure and function of internal organs, as well as structural and functional abnormalities in specific areas of the body. One of the main benefits of MRI scans is that they provide non-invasive and relatively safe ways to examine the inside of the body without the use of radiation. This makes them ideal for diagnosing conditions or diseases such as joint disorders, abdomen pain, cancer, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, stroke, and heart disease. Furthermore, MRI scans allow Radiologists healthcare professionals to create detailed images that can be used for precise evaluation of changes in tissue composition over time, making them an invaluable tool for assessing and monitoring treatment responses in patients with complex or serious health conditions. Overall, MRI scans are an essential tool for modern healthcare, providing critical insights into many different medical conditions and allowing us to better understand how our bodies work.

MRI SCAN PROCEDURE

During an MRI scan, patients are typically placed inside a cylindrical machine and exposed to a combination of radio frequency pulses and electromagnetic fields. These signals create an overall picture of the body’s internal structures, which can be interpreted by specialized software or medical professionals. Though the scan itself is relatively simple, there are certain steps that must be taken before and after the procedure in order to ensure patient safety. For example, subjects must remove all metallic objects such as watches or jewelry before entering the MRI machine. In addition, it is essential that patients remain completely still throughout their scans so that high-resolution images can be obtained. At Aarthi Scans the technicians are trained to guide the patients well and ensure a safe MRI process.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE TAKING AN MRI

Before undergoing an MRI scan, there are a few important things that you should keep in mind. First, it is crucial to let the technician conducting your scan know if you have any metal objects in your clothing (coins, credit cards, watch, chain, hair pins)body, such as fillings in your teeth or an implanted device like a pacemaker or cochlear implant or external prosthesis. Additionally, you should inform the technician of any previous allergies that you may have, especially to latex or contrast materials if they will be used during your examination. It is also advisable to dress comfortably and wear clothing without zippers or metal buttons that might interfere with the machine. If you follow these simple guidelines before undergoing an MRI scan, you can rest assured knowing that the results will be accurate and reliable.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Both MRIs and CT scans can view internal body structures. However, a CT scan is faster and can provide pictures of tissues, organs, and skeletal structure. An MRI is highly adept at capturing images that help doctors determine if there are abnormal tissues within the body. MRIs are more detailed in their images.

  • Risks of the Procedure Because radiation is not used, there is no risk of exposure to radiation during an MRI procedure. However, due to the use of the strong magnet, MRI cannot be performed on patients with: Implanted pacemakers. Intracranial aneurysm clips.

  • On the day of your MRI scan, you should be able to eat, drink and take any medication as usual, unless you're advised otherwise. In some cases, you may be asked not to eat or drink anything for up to 4 hours before the scan, and sometimes you may be asked to drink a fairly large amount of water beforehand.

  • MRI allows to assess the soft tissue and bone marrow involvement in case of inflammation and/or infection. MRI is capable of detecting more inflammatory lesions and erosions than US, X-ray, or CT. Standard scintigraphy plays a crucial role, and data from positron emission tomography (PET) are also promising.

  • MRI can provide better information about the eye in the context of the orbit than any other ocular imaging device. This allows detection of the etiology of ocular abnormalities related to primary orbital pathologies (2,4–7).

  • Benefits of an MRI MRI is the most effective way to diagnose problems within any joint and the image sensitivity makes it the most accurate imaging tool available in detecting arthritis and other inflammatory changes.
