What is an KUB Ultrasound?
A KUB (Kidney, Ureter, Bladder) Ultrasound produces pictures of the structures in and around the abdominal area which helps physicians diagnose various types of medical conditions such as kidney stones, urinary tract infections, etc. The patient will lie on their back while gel is applied to the skin over the abdomen; a transducer is then used to send sound waves which bounce off internal organs and then sends a signal back to create real-time images on a monitor. A radiographer or physician may interpret these images and discuss with their patient any findings from the exam. A KUB Ultrasound provides important information about kidney function, bladder size and shape, as well as any obstructions in the ureters.
When is a KUB Ultrasound prescribed?
A KUB Ultrasound is prescribed in case the physician suspects something unusual with the urinary tract system. It can also help to detect many diseases and abnormalities such as enlarged kidneys, kidney stones, clogged tubes, infections, abscesses or cysts. Often performed when a patient is exhibiting signs of abdominal pain, frequent urination, flank pain or blood in the urine, a KUb Ultrasound scan allows physicians to diagnose different conditions accurately without having to perform invasive procedures. The overall procedure typically takes just a few minutes to complete and results are available shortly afterwards.
