What is an Sono Mammography?
Utilizing sound waves to produce high resolution images of the breasts and surrounding tissues, sonograms are most commonly used to further evaluate an abnormality found on a routine mammogram, however, they can also be employed as a flat or three-dimensional scan of the entire breast, making them very effective in detecting early stage cancer cells or tumours that may not be visible through conventional methods. Sono mammography, also known as breast ultrasound, is also incredibly useful for women with a higher risk profile for various types of breast cancer due to its ability to detect breast abnormalities much earlier than traditional screening methods. It is becoming more common as a screening tool as it is non-invasive, relatively cost-effective and efficient in assessing the health of a woman’s breasts with minimal radiation risk.
When is a Sono mammography prescribed?
A sono mammography is commonly prescribed by doctors to diagnose potential lumps or masses in the breast. It is prescribed to detect any abnormal growths that may not be picked up on an X-Ray imaging. It can also provide more clear images for surgeons to use during biopsies and other surgical procedures. This noninvasive test can be used when viewing the entire area of tissue, or focus on just a single part of concern. Sono mammographies are typically recommended for women over 40 years of age, although it can be ordered by a doctor regardless of age if they are concerned about any issues related to breast health.
