What is an Nuchal Translucency?
A nuchal translucency (NT) scan is a type of ultrasound performed between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy. It measures the space in the nuchal fold at the back of an unborn baby’s neck. By assessing this nuchal translucency thickness, along with other factors such as the mother's age and levels of hormones in her blood, it helps to identify those fetuses which carry a higher risk for chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome or heart defects. It should be noted that a nuchal translucency scan is not always accurate and therefore it should not always be relied on when deciding whether to continue with the pregnancy or not.
When is an NT Scan prescribed?
This procedure can help diagnose any serious medical congenital issues that a baby may be born with, allowing parents to make informed decisions both during and soon after pregnancy. It also allows prenatal care providers to determine appropriate medical interventions if necessary. It is thus considered one of the most important early screenings for expectant mothers as it provides invaluable information about fetal health status in utero.
