Having more melanin reduces your ability to synthesize Vitamin D from the sun, hence resulting in lower levels of that vitamin.   

Vitamin D deficiency can cause calcium deficiency disease, hormonal imbalance, hyperparathyroidism, and also a spike in blood pressure. Low Vitamin D levels have also been linked to type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. Several biological and environmental factors can put one at risk for Vitamin D deficiency such as old age and higher melanin content.

Fatty Fish such as tuna, salmon, egg yolks, mushroom, beef liver, and cheese are all rich sources of Vitamin D. So include them in your diet regularly.   

Consume more fortified foods:

Fortified foods are foods that add an extra source of nutrition. These include cow’s milk, cereal, tofu, and plant-based milk alternatives such as almonds, and hemp milk. Fortified foods can quickly increase the Vitamin D levels in your body.
