Claustrophobia while taking MRI? Follow a few simple things to encounter it

Are you someone who gets uneasy at the thought of undergoing an MRI? If the idea of being inside a confined space triggers your anxiety, you’re not alone. Many people experience intense nervousness due to claustrophobia during MRI scans.

MRI scans which are crucial for medical diagnosis, can be distressing for individuals who struggle with confined spaces or find it hard to remain still for extended periods. Claustrophobia is a common concern associated with MRI scans. Although Open MRI and wide-bore MRI have become available in various parts of the world, they might not be easily accessible in India. Therefore, managing claustrophobia becomes an essential aspect of preparing for an MRI. In this blog, we’ll explore effective strategies to help you overcome your anxiety and navigate your MRI experience with ease.

What happens during the scan?

When you go into the MRI room, a radiologist or the lab staff will ask you to lie on a table. If they’re scanning your upper body, your head will point towards the machine. If they’re checking your lower body, your feet will go in first. Then, the table will slowly move into the MRI machine.

Once the scan starts, the machine will make loud noises like whirring and banging. These sounds are normal. The duration of the scan is around 30 – 60 minutes. During the MRI scan, you have to stay very still to ensure clear images. If you’re worried or have any questions, you can talk to the technician through a microphone inside the MRI.

Tips to cope with claustrophobia

Wear an Eye Mask: Wearing an eye mask can help you not focus on the environment and detach you from the procedure. This can help ease feelings of confinement and reduce anxiety during the MRI scan.

Use Earplugs: The loud noises produced by the MRI machine can add to the anxiety. Using earplugs can muffle these sounds, creating a more peaceful atmosphere, and reducing stress.

Listen to Music: Music can serve as a calming distraction. Bringing headphones and playing your favourite tunes or soothing sounds can divert your attention from the MRI environment and provide relaxation.

Educate Yourself: Understanding the MRI procedure alleviates the fear of the unknown and promotes a better experience. Research the steps involved and ask your doctor/radiologist to explain the process in detail and clear up any doubts you have regarding the process.

Focus on Breathing: Practice deep breathing exercises before and during the MRI. Slow, controlled breaths can help regulate your heartbeat and keep anxiety at bay.

Bring Support: Having a friend or family member accompany you can provide emotional support. Their presence can be reassuring, and they can help distract you from any anxious thoughts.

Dealing with Claustrophobia

If none of the above methods have been effective in the past or if you anticipate they won’t be helpful in your MRI exams, there’s an option of using sedation. This is especially suitable for individuals dealing with severe cases of MRI claustrophobia and anxiety. It’s important to note that this sedation won’t cause you to fall asleep, it will only induce relaxation throughout the exam. To determine if sedation is the right solution for managing your MRI-related claustrophobia, have a conversation with your doctor and explore this option together.

Overcoming claustrophobia during an MRI might take a combination of techniques. Remember that your comfort matters, and discussing your concerns with the medical staff can lead to a more positive and less stressful experience.
