What is an Abdominal Ultrasound?
An ultrasound abdomen scan is a diagnostic procedure used to view images of the abdomen and the internal organs contained within. It is a non-invasive imaging test, typically performed using a handheld ultrasound device which transmits ultrasound waves that are bounced off of the soft tissues and organs in people’s bodies to generate an image on a screen. An ultrasound abdomen scan can be used to check for any changes or abnormalities in the abdominal area, such as pyloric stenosis in newborn babies, gallstones, organ size and position, blockages and fluid accumulation. Ultrasound scans can provide useful insight into many different medical conditions which may have otherwise gone undetected until they were more serious.
When is an Ultrasound Abdomen Scan prescribed?
An ultrasound abdomen scan is typically prescribed for a variety of possible health issues. If a doctor suspects the presence of an abdominal condition, ultrasound imaging can be useful in diagnosing and tracking any changes to the abdominal organs. A ultrasound abdomen scan can also be used to check normal organ activity, monitor potential organ disease progression, and track the success of treatments. Ultrasound imaging has increasingly become an essential component of medical examinations because it is non-invasive and provides quick, reliable results.
